Many in our community of Vaudreuil-Soulanges, and Canadians from across our country, have called for action against gun violence and our Liberal Government delivered through Bill C-21, the most transformative amendments to gun control laws in our nation in over four decades.
Recently enacted into law, it bans the purchase of new handguns in Canada, keeping unnecessary weapons out of our communities while respecting the rights of responsible hunters and trappers. It directly responds to the increase in violent, firearm-related crimes, of which handguns account for 54 percent nationwide.
After engaging with stakeholders, including gun violence survivors, hunters, trappers, and Indigenous
communities, Bill C-21 includes a set of comprehensive actions, such as:
- Defining what constitutes an “assault-style firearm” and banning over 1500 models of assault-style firearms.
- Tackling the emerging threat of “ghost guns” created by 3D printing untraceable gun components.
- Reinstating the Canadian Firearms Advisory Committee.
- Planning the regulation of large-capacity magazines.
Additionally, the bill provides for the revocation of an individual's license if reasonable suspicion arises of their involvement in acts of domestic violence or stalking.
Bill C-21 builds on the investments we have already made to stop illegal guns from making their way across our borders, such as more CBSA agents and K9 units on the front lines, and builds on the funding we have put in place for community programming aimed at keeping our children out of gangs.
Together, they constitute an unprecedented, multi-pronged approach to creating safer communities for children, parents, and seniors alike.
Warm regards,
