Building Closer Ties with Mexico

Canada and Mexico have shared a close partnership for decades, built on friendship, trade, and a shared commitment to prosperity. Last week in Mexico City, Prime Minister Mark Carney and President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that we are taking this relationship to the next level with a new Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

This agreement is about creating more opportunities for Canadians, while ensuring that North America remains one of the most competitive regions in the world.

What this means for Canada & Canadians:

  • Trade and jobs: Expanded markets for Canadian businesses in sectors like agriculture, critical minerals, and clean energy. This means more opportunities for workers here at home.
  • Infrastructure: Long-term investments in ports, rail, and energy corridors that strengthen supply chains and create high-paying careers.
  • Security: A new bilateral security dialogue to fight organized crime, cyber threats, drug trafficking, and human trafficking.
  • Climate action: Reinforced co-operation on protecting wildlife and freshwater systems, supporting Canada’s commitment to sustainability.

The government also announced:

  • $9.9 million in funding for UN-led projects in Mexico, including support for migrant integration programs and the fight against illicit fentanyl.
  • A Canadian trade mission to Mexico to open new doors for Canadian businesses.
  • Canada’s role in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted with Mexico and the United States. This event is expected to create 24,000 jobs and add $2 billion to our economy, with significant boosts to tourism and small businesses in cities such as Toronto and Vancouver.

Prime Minister Carney said it best: “Canada and Mexico are entering a new era of co-operation. We are elevating our partnerships in trade, investment, energy, and security to create more opportunity for Canadian workers, expanded markets for Canadian businesses, and more certainty for Canadian investors.”

For us in our community of Vaudreuil, this matters. Our community is home to small businesses, entrepreneurs, and families that benefit directly from stronger trade and economic growth. When Canadian businesses thrive abroad, it creates good jobs and stability here at home.

Sincerely,

Member of Parliament, Vaudreuil
