Today, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced new federal measures focused on making groceries and other essentials more affordable, while building a stronger and more resilient Canadian economy. These steps are about helping you now, while strengthening our food system for the years ahead.
A key measure is the new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit, which replaces the former GST Credit. Starting in July 2026, the benefit will increase by 25 percent for five years. It also includes a one-time payment equal to a 50 percent increase this year. Depending on household income and family size, eligible households could receive up to $1,890 this year; millions of Canadians who qualify will receive this support.
The government is also acting to reduce pressure in the food system itself:
- $500 million is being set aside through the Strategic Response Fund to help businesses manage supply chain disruptions to help businesses manage costs while easing pressure on consumer prices.
- A new $150 million Food Security Fund will support small and medium-sized businesses and the organizations that help them.
- Immediate expensing for greenhouse buildings will lower food production costs and support more domestic food supply.
- $20 million is being provided to the Local Food Infrastructure Fund to help food banks and community organizations respond to increased demand.
Work is also underway on a National Food Security Strategy. This work will examine steps such as clearer price information for consumers and stronger oversight of food supply chains.
These measures build on actions already taken to lower costs, including cutting taxes for 22 million Canadians, removing the GST for many first-time homebuyers, and making the National School Food Program permanent.
You work hard. Your family members and loved ones work hard. When things get tough, you deserve support that is clear, practical, and focused on making it easier for you. The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit announced by Prime Minister Carney today does just that.
Sincerely,
