Prime Minister Carney Advances Trade Talks in Washington

Prime Minister Mark Carney has just returned from a productive working visit to Washington, D.C., where he met with President Donald J. Trump at the White House to advance key priorities in trade and defence.

The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a stronger, more secure partnership between Canada and the United States. Canada now enjoys the best trade agreement of any U.S. partner, with 85% of our trade moving tariff-free across the border. This progress protects Canadian jobs, keeps our economy competitive, and strengthens our supply chains in critical sectors like steel, aluminium, and energy.

The Prime Minister also raised Canada’s growing role in North American defence and Arctic security. With new investments in our military and a forthcoming Defence Industrial Strategy, Canada is stepping up to protect our sovereignty and ensure that our Forces have the tools they need to defend our territory and support our allies. The Prime Minister and President Trump also addressed global security concerns, including the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

During his visit, Prime Minister Carney also met with congressional leaders and business executives to discuss trade priorities ahead of the CUSMA review. His message was clear: Canada’s prosperity depends on fair trade, open markets, and partnerships that deliver real results for Canadian workers and families.

As the Prime Minister said, “President Trump and I know that there are areas where our nations can compete, and areas where we will be stronger together. We’re focused on building these new opportunities to create greater certainty, security, and prosperity for our workers and businesses.”

We are protecting good Canadian jobs, standing up for our values, and building an economy that works for everyone. By strengthening our partnership with the United States, we’re ensuring that Canadian workers, families, and businesses have every opportunity to succeed in the years ahead.

Canada’s future is strong, and our government is determined to keep it that way.

Sincerely,

Member of Parliament, Vaudreuil
