Update: U.S. Tariffs on Canada Postponed

Dear neighbours in Vaudreuil,

I wanted to share an important update regarding the U.S. tariffs that were set to take effect on Canadian imports. After discussions between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Donald Trump, the U.S. has agreed to postpone the implementation of these tariffs for at least 30 days
Initially, the U.S. administration planned to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian exports, citing trade imbalances and national security concerns. However, through diplomatic efforts, the tariffs on Canada and Mexico have been delayed to allow for further discussions and cooperative measures.
As part of this agreement, Canada will invest the 1.3 billion dollars in additional border measures we announced last year before Donald Trump was sworn in, establish a special position to oversee efforts against fentanyl smuggling in both directions and ensure continuous border monitoring. This was a key issue raised by the U.S., and our government is committed to working constructively to address it while protecting Canadian interests.
This postponement provides a critical opportunity for both countries to continue negotiations and work towards a resolution that safeguards Canadian businesses and workers. Our government remains firm in its stance: while we are open to collaboration, we will not hesitate to take action to defend our economy should these tariffs be reintroduced. Our response tariffs are still on the table.
I understand that many of you may still have concerns about how this situation could evolve in the coming weeks. As your Member of Parliament, I will continue to monitor developments closely and advocate for the best interests of our community.

As promised, I will continue to keep you updated as this situation evolves.

Sincerely,

Member of Parliament, Vaudreuil
