Summer Jobs for Youth

The Government of Canada and Canada’s parliament provide interesting summer employment opportunities for students. Now is a good time to start looking for a summer job. Here are some ideas. All these programs require you to apply online.

Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP) – Many government departments use this program as a recruitment tool to hire full-time students. The opportunities offered may be for part-time work all year round or during the summer only. Employment opportunities in our region include Guide interpreter at Rideau Hall as well as jobs providing assistance to tourists as a Capital information officer or tour guide.

Young Canada Works offers a range of opportunities for high school, CEGEP and university students, such as organizing cultural or recreational projects in a heritage organization, gaining practical work experience while improving second-language skills, or learning new skills in preserving and promoting our cultural heritage. The 2016 YCW Campaign has now begun.

Summer Student Employment Program at the House of Commons provides summer employment to full-time secondary or post-secondary students. The summer 2016 deadline has yet not been established, so stay in touch with my office in the coming weeks.

Parliament Hill Boutique  – provides jobs at the Parliamentary boutique to students registered in a full-time college or university program. Applications are accepted throughout the year.

Other Programs for youth:

Senate Page Program provides 15 jobs working for the Senate for full-time undergraduate students in one of the four universities in the National Capital Region. The competition for next year has already closed, but look out for information during the spring.

Senate Student Employment Program -Throughout the year, the Senate hires full-time secondary or post-secondary students to work in various areas of the Senate Administration.

House of Commons Page Program Each year, 40 students are selected from high schools and CEGEPs across Canada to come to Ottawa to work as Pages in the House of Commons. Pages have the opportunity to learn about the House of Commons while witnessing the legislative process first hand. Those hired as Pages work on a part-time basis during their first year of study at one of the universities in the National Capital Region. Please look out for information at the end of the summer.

Parliament of Canada – Youth internships and employment opportunities The Senate, the House of Commons, the Library of Parliament and other organizations offer Canadian youth unique job opportunities, internships and programs to participate in and learn how Parliament works.

Specialized recruitment programs for students and recent graduates are available on the jobs.gc.ca Web site throughout the year.
