I want to provide you with an important update on the latest developments regarding the U.S. administration’s decision to impose tariffs of up to 25% on key Canadian exports, including aluminum, steel, and agriculture. These measures are unfair and put Canadian businesses, workers, and families at risk.
On Saturday evening, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed the nation with a clear and unwavering message: Canada will always stand up for itself. While we remain committed to a fair and cooperative trade relationship with the United States, we will not sit idly by while Canadian industries are targeted.
In response, our government is taking decisive action by implementing $155 billion in retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports. The first $30 billion takes effect tonight at midnight, with the remaining $125 billion following in the next 21 days. These measures are carefully targeted and will apply to a broad range of
American products, including bourbon, wine, beer, fruits, juices, clothing, footwear, sports equipment, and household appliances. Additionally, we are considering further actions on critical minerals and energy exports to protect Canada's long-term economic stability.
We recognize that these tariffs will have economic ripple effects, including potential price increases and supply chain adjustments. However, Canada is prepared. Our workers and businesses are resilient, and we will do whatever it takes to defend them.
Now, more than ever, we must come together to support Canadian businesses. By choosing Canadian-made products and services, we help keep jobs in our communities, strengthen our economy, and show solidarity with the workers who keep our country moving forward. Whether it’s food, clothing, household goods, or services, every dollar spent on Canadian products makes a difference.
As your Member of Parliament, I will continue to keep you informed as the situation unfolds. In the meantime, I encourage you to learn more about Canada’s response here:
Thank you for your time, your resilience, and your trust. Together, we will stand strong for Canada.
Sincerely,
