Defending Canada’s Trade Interests & Strengthening Our Economy

Dear Neighbours,

want to update you on two important trade issues: Canada’s response to U.S. tariffs and our work to strengthen interprovincial trade.

On March 4th, 2025, President Donald Trump imposed tariffs of 25% on Canadian imports and 10% on Canadian energy products. These tariffs are unjustified and hurt workers and businesses on both sides of the border.

Canada has responded decisively by implementing 25% tariffs on $30 billion worth of U.S. goods, with plans to extend them to an additional $125 billion in the coming weeks if necessary. We are also taking action through the World Trade Organization (WTO) to challenge these measures and uphold fair trade agreements.

While we remain open to dialogue, our government will always stand up for Canadian workers and businesses to ensure a fair-trading relationship.

While we address international trade challenges, we are also making historic progress in strengthening trade within Canada. The Government of Canada has removed over half of the federal exceptions to the Canadian Free Trade Agreement (CFTA), reducing barriers for businesses and workers across provinces.

We are working closely with provincial and territorial premiers to:

Harmonize regulations so businesses can operate smoothly across Canada.
Cut red tape to lower costs and increase competitiveness.
Expand labour mobility agreements so skilled workers can move freely between provinces.

This has the potential ability of adding $200 billion to the Canadian economy. By making it easier for Canadian businesses to trade within our own borders, we are creating new opportunities, boosting economic growth, and ensuring a strong, united economy. We know that economic shifts bring uncertainty, but Canada has always thrived by standing together and focusing on solutions.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Your feedback is invaluable, and I am here to support our community every step of the way.
